Early 1800s - 1860
Four years after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, he returned to Singapore and conducted a revamp of the entire town. Various land parcels were then distributed to the various ethnic groups for their businesses and trade.

At that point in time, the Chinese, particulary the Teochews, engaged largely in the agricultural business. They cleared large pieces of land for the cultivation of pepper, gambier and nutmeg. The former Tanglin Barracks was one of the flourishing nutmeg plantation sites. However, in 1857, the entire fortune of nutmeg cultivation came to an abrupt halt caused by a blight.

1860 - Present
What is a misfortune for one proves to be a blessing to the island's planners. A large portion of the nutmeg plantation of Tanglin was carved out for the construction of the Tanglin Barracks in 1860. The intention was to provide accommodation for the military troops in Singapore.

In 1867, there were plans to station a European regiment at the Tanglin Barracks. Extensive renovatuions were carried out. By 1893, Tanglin Barracks was home to 26 officers and 661 men of the only infantry battalion in Singapore, two artillery batteries, one company of Royal Engineers, and a few Sikh soldiers from the Chine Gun Lascars.

Even in the days of the Ministry of Defence of Singapore, the historical buildings played a significant role. Many military planning and training activities, such as the Medical Classification Centre, Officers' Personnel Centre, Naval Training Department, SAF Careers Centrre, the Quartemasters' Store, the SAF Child Development Centre, the Physical Performance and the Medical Services Headquarters left their prints in the history of the Barrakcs.

Today
Today, Tanglin Village (formely known as Tanglin Barracks) retains its rustic charms as an urban haven where city folks can enjoy a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Former military buildings, set amidst lush and verdant surroundings, are converted into a place where city dwellers take in a slower pace in life by visiting the spa, doing yoga or for a drink of wine. A place where one can buy antique furniture, select art pieces and quaint merchandise.. essentially, it is an initmate urban sanctuary where shopping is art and sports are spa.
